What Indicates a Problem With AC Refrigerants?

Air conditioning refrigerant is the stuff that runs in a cycle through an HVAC system to help keep a home cool. It is contained in a closed system of copper coils and absorbs heat and evaporates, then releases the heat through condensation via a compressor. An air conditioner will not work properly without the proper amount of refrigerant (also called coolant or by the brand name Freon). This problem cannot be dealt with DIY but must be diagnosed and repaired by a professional HVAC technician.

Warning #1: A Frozen Evaporator Coil

When there is ice on the coils of an air conditioning unit, one of the first things an HVAC technician will check is the coolant. They will likely use a refrigerant leak detector to find the location or locations where the air conditioner refrigerant is leaking out. The closed system that contains the refrigerant can be compromised for several reasons, usually involving one of the following things.

• Age contributes to the possibility of leakage
• Corrosion through chemical or environmental means can cause a leak
• Punctures from falling debris or the like can happen and cause a leak
• Storm damage can be responsible for a refrigerant leak

This type of leak usually requires replacing the entire evaporator coil because the holes are often impossible to fully seal.

Warning #2: The Air Conditioning Isn't Cooling Well

Though there are many reasons why an air conditioner may not be cooling properly, the air conditioning coolant is one of the first things a good technician will check. A coolant leak can produce the issues listed below.

• Warm Air: The air from the vents may be room temperature or even hot. This does the opposite of the desired effect.
• Longer Cycling or Constant Cycling: The cooling cycle may have to run longer to reach optimum temperature or may be constantly running.
• High Energy Bills: Low refrigerant can make the AC work harder and can reduce efficiency, thereby increasing the home's energy consumption.

Adding more coolant will not fix the problem of a coolant leak; it will merely mask the symptoms. Escaping refrigerant can only be stopped by ensuring the coils' circuit is fully sealed. 

Warning #3: Strange Sounds

If a homeowner hears unexpected and unusual sounds from their HVAC unit, it could be a refrigerant leak. Hissing, gurgling, or bubbling noises can indicate a pretty serious leak. Quickly escaping gas will make such noises as it is released into the environment. A homeowner should avoid investigating the leak themselves, as breathing in the released refrigerant can cause physical problems such as lightheadedness and nausea, and burns have also resulted from exposure.
